Shandon Station 51

Station 51 is located in the community of Shandon at the northeastern edge of San Luis Obispo County. The station operates as an “Amador” facility, a cooperative staffing model that provides cost-effective, year-round fire protection. During the declared fire season, the station is funded by the State of California, while San Luis Obispo County provides funding during the non-fire season. This partnership ensures seamless service delivery and maintains a consistent level of professional fire protection for the community and surrounding region.

The station serves a large and predominantly rural response area characterized by expansive agricultural lands, including ranches, vineyards, and wineries. Much of the area consists of grass-covered terrain and rolling hills extending into the northern Temblor Range, creating significant wildland fire response responsibilities. Station 51 is also strategically located near the intersection of Highways 41 and 46, two major transportation corridors that connect the Central Coast with California’s Central Valley. As a result, personnel regularly respond to traffic collisions, medical emergencies, and mutual aid incidents throughout neighboring Kern, Fresno, and Kings counties.

A dedicated team of 15 Paid Call Firefighters (PCFs) supports Station 51 and responds to incidents through a radio paging system. Company 51 is responsible for staffing, maintaining, and operating Engine 51, providing critical emergency response capabilities to the Shandon community and the surrounding rural areas. Through a combination of cooperative funding, regional partnerships, and community-based staffing, Station 51 plays a vital role in protecting lives, property, and natural resources throughout northeastern San Luis Obispo County.
